Things won’t really do the same on our little street any more. Our good neighbor, Gerald Curry, a lifelong resident of Savage and former member of the Savage Volunteer Fire Company, perished Dec. 30 after an ailment that had been diagnosed last July.
His funeral service took place on the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge on Jan. 3. The homily was presented with from the Rev. Douglas Fox, pastor in the Savage United Methodist Church. Gerald’s longtime friend, Benny Mullins, also of Savage, gave the eulogy. Mr. Mullins, whom Gerald affectionately called “Dumbo,” remembered Gerald as a fun-loving, kind-hearted man and reminisced concerning the many times they would go together to travel to friends and acquaintances in the hospital. He also remembered Gerald being a loving son who by making use of his wife, Barbara, spent 10 years caring for his elderly and infirm mother until her death. Gerald and Barbara moved together with his mother after he’d your home remodeled to add another story. That had been the house Gerald was created in, and it also was the home where he was given die, after being diagnosed with leukemia earlier this summer.
As soon as the eulogy and remembrances from one of the gathered family, Jessie Vollmerhausen, also of Savage, sang a moving rendition of “I’ll Fly Away.” Many members with the Volunteer Firefighters of Howard County were present with the funeral fully dress uniform, and Gerald’s coffin was transported towards the Savage Cemetery in a very Savage VFD fire engine, as well as a miles-long line funeral procession down Route 1 to Savage for that burial.
My spouse and i always appreciated Gerald being a gregarious man who loved to stay on his front porch in good weather and visit with whoever were around. He always had a friendly wave, smile, and joke and was always able to lend a hand or perhaps a tool for virtually every domestic emergency.
One Christmas Eve day, not long after Gerald and Barbara had moved in in the adjacent house, our sewer supported. Dale determined which the blockage was somewhere not in the house and because the day was warm, Gerald watched while Dale dug up the front lawn to reach the sewer main and expectorate the tree roots which were blocking it.
It turned out late in the afternoon by the point Dale discovered that a rubber gasket from the sewer main had disintegrated together to get replaced. But where would one get a special rubber sewer main gasket on Christmas Eve? Gerald called him over and after having a joke or two, asked what he needed. Dale described the gasket. Gerald said, “Persevere a few minutes.” He disappeared into his house, and inside an hour, returned which has a gasket. It was conventional him to have all sorts of such useful items on hand. And that of a blessing it was which he found it on Christmas Day and it snowed.
We and everyone in the neighborhood will miss Gerald’s mischievous smile, hearty laugh and helpful spirit. Contributions could possibly be stated in his memory for the Savage Volunteer Fire Department, 8925 Lincoln St., Savage, Maryland 20763, or even the Savage United Methodist Church, 9050 Baltimore St., Savage, Maryland 20763.
